Stone, stones

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Gen 35:14) - Hebrews commonly built houses and other structures of stone, the best using large squared and dressed blocks. Amos warned luxurious Israelites that they would build houses of hewn stone but not live in them (Amos 5:11). For Solomon's temple, great, costly, dressed stones were brought for the foundation (1 Kgs 5:17). In ancient times stone knives were used (Exod 4:25; Josh 5:2), and Egyptians used them in preparing bodies for embalming. Christ's disciples are called living stones (1 Pet 2:5), expressing their spiritual union with Christ as cornerstone and source of life.
