has always been reckoned by the Church as apocryphal, and evidently constitutes a work of a later period. It is remarkable that each of the three most important religious epochs in Old and New Testament history is marked by a miraculous instance of translation to heaven: thus, that of the patriarchal Church in the person of Enoch, that of the Jewish Church in the person of the prophet Elijah, and that of the Christian Church in the wondrous event of the Ascension into heaven of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Author of our salvation, and of His Most Pure Mother, the Ever-Virgin Mary, as pious tradition has preserved it in the Christian Church.
