Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Exod. 29:5; John 19:23)—a close-fitting garment worn next to the body by men and women and included in priestly clothing. Biblical usage can sometimes extend more broadly to a robe or garment. The tunic of the Lord Jesus, for which the soldiers cast lots, was seamless and woven in one piece from the top. Later tradition says that the Theotokos wove it, but John does not state who made it.
