Writing

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

—the origin of writing is unknown. The genealogy in Genesis 5 may imply the existence of written records at a very early time, and the book of Job belongs to remote antiquity. The first form of writing was probably pictorial or hieroglyphic: an eye could signify God’s knowledge, an eye with a scepter a king, and a lion courage or strength.
