Worms
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Exod. 16:20, 24; Jonah 4:7; Job 7:5; 17:14; 21:26)—Scripture uses “worm” for various larvae, maggots, and creeping creatures without zoological precision. Manna kept contrary to God’s command bred worms and stank, though the portion reserved for the Sabbath did not (Exod. 16:20, 24). Worms accompany decay and burial and therefore become images of mortality and humiliation (Job 17:14; 21:26; Isa. 14:11). Job also describes his diseased flesh as clothed with worms (Job 7:5).
