(Josh. 15:7) — the name of a height not far from Gilgal, at the entrance to the wilderness of Jericho. The name signifies “red,” or “bloody,” which, it is thought, alludes to the frequent murders and robberies that took place in its vicinity. There is reason to think that the place indicated in the Savior’s parable of the Good Samaritan lay precisely here (Luke 10:30–36). The ruins of a city found here today are known by the name Kalaat ed-Damm.
