(God is life) (1 Kings 16:24) — a man of Bethel, who rebuilt Jericho in the days of Ahab, thereby violating the curse laid upon this city by Joshua (Josh. 5:1–26 [as given]), which brought upon himself the curse and upon his family the judgment of God, accompanied by the loss of his sons: his firstborn Abiram, who died at the laying of the city’s foundation, and his younger son Segub, who died when the city’s gates were set up (Josh. 6:25 [as given]). “He laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn, and in his youngest son Segub set up the gates of it, according to the word of the Lord, which He spake by Joshua the son of Nun.”
