Apollos, or Apollo
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Acts 18:24; 19:1) — an eloquent Jew, learned in the Scriptures, a native of Alexandria in Egypt. At first he was instructed only in the rudiments of the Christian teaching, and knew only the baptism of John, but afterward received from Aquila and Priscilla in Ephesus a detailed instruction in the teaching of the Lord. He labored greatly in Achaia and in Corinth for the conversion of the pagans. In Corinth, love for him among the disciples even caused a certain division in the Church, which was afterward rebuked by the Apostle Paul (1 Cor. 1:12; 3:3, 4–7, 21, 22).
Afterward Apollos was in Crete (Titus 3:13). Tradition says that he was bishop in Smyrna, but this is not evident from history. By another tradition, he was bishop in Caesarea. His memory is celebrated January 4 and December 8.
