Caesar

(Luke 2:1) - the grandson and successor of Julius Caesar as Roman emperor. Augustus, meaning exalted or venerable, was an honorary title conferred on him by the Roman Senate, and the month in which he received it was named August. Caesar became the royal title of the emperors; therefore Tiberius is called Caesar (Matt 22:21), as is Nero (Acts 25:11). Augustus began as a personal honor, but afterward became inseparable from the imperial office as a sovereign title.
