Asher

(happy) — A) the name of four persons: a) (Gen. 30:13) son of Jacob by Zilpah, Leah’s maid, forefather of the tribe of Asher. His portion was the northern part of the land of Canaan, which included the especially fertile and productive land near Mount Carmel, in accordance with the blessing given by the patriarch Jacob to Asher: “Blessed be Asher above the other sons,” said the prophet Moses in his blessing of Asher; “let him be acceptable to his brethren, and let him dip his foot in oil.

Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be” (Deut. 33:24, 25). “Out of Asher his bread shall be fat,” said Jacob as he was dying, “and he shall yield royal dainties” (Gen. 49:20). The boundaries of the land of Asher were: on the west, Phoenicia; on the north, the mountains of Lebanon; Mount Carmel and the territory of the tribe of Manasseh on the south; on the east, the tribes of Zebulun and Issachar. St. Anna the prophetess was of the tribe of Asher (Luke 2:36).

In the Revelation of John (7:6), among the sealed servants of God are represented some sealed also from the tribe of Asher. b) (Exod. 6:24) son of Korah. c) (1 Chron. 6:23) an ancestor of Samuel, son of Ebiasaph. d) (1 Chron. 3:17) son of Jeconiah, of the descendants of David.
