Day’s journey

(Gen. 30:36; 31:23; Exod. 3:18; Num. 10:33; Luke 2:44) — the most common measure among the ancients for reckoning distances: a day’s journey, two days’ journey, three days’ journey. But since the length of a day varies, and the speed of walking or riding depends on many conditions, a day’s journey is reckoned variously — anywhere from six to eight or ten hours.
