(Lev. 11:30)—the traditional rendering of one of the small land animals declared unclean. The identity of the Hebrew animal name is uncertain, and modern translations vary. The chameleon is a slow-moving, tree-dwelling reptile notable for independently moving eyes, a rapidly extended tongue, and changes of color used in signaling and concealment.
