Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Lev. 11:6; Deut. 14:7) (in Hebrew, arnebeth) — a four-footed animal of the order of rodents, reckoned by the Mosaic Law among the unclean animals, as it is likewise regarded by most of the peoples of the East. It has a cud, but only in appearance, for it has a habit of grinding its teeth against one another, which gives it the appearance of chewing the cud.
