(a bird) (Lev. 11:17)—a bird classed as unclean under the Mosaic Law. The prophets use its presence as an emblem of ruin and desolation (Isa. 34:11; Zeph. 2:14), although the source observes that the underlying terms in these passages have often been rendered pelican or cormorant and may denote more than one kind of seabird. Its flesh is very fatty, but the Arabs cited by the source ate it readily. The bird is described as dark green, with brown upon the back and wings.
