Chariots

(Gen 45:19; 46 and elsewhere) - chariots were used among the Hebrews as early as horses. Genesis 41:43 presents one as an object of royal state, and Exodus 14:6 mentions them in war. They were far better suited to the plains of Assyria and the Nile valley than to mountainous Palestine, and ancient Assyrian and Egyptian monuments contain many representations of them. The Hebrews at first made little use of chariots, partly because of their terrain and partly because the Mosaic Law forbade multiplying horses (Deut 17:16). Neighboring peoples, however, employed them in great numbers (Exod 14:7; Judg 4:3; 1 Sam 13:5).
