Sand
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Gen. 22:17; Ex. 2:12 and elsewhere)—a mineral substance composed of small particles of quartz and other minerals formed by the wearing away of flint-bearing or quartz rock. In Holy Scripture sand sometimes symbolizes an innumerable multitude, as in Abraham’s descendants (Gen. 22:17), the grain Joseph gathered during Egypt’s years of plenty (Gen. 41:49), the multitude of the Canaanite army (Josh. 11:4), and birds (Ps. 78:27).
