Rings and signets

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Gen 38:18 and elsewhere) - Scripture often names rings as ornaments. In antiquity, as among various peoples in the source's day, they were worn in the ears, on the wrists and fingers, and even in the nose. Pharaoh's ring, taken from his own hand and placed upon Joseph's (Gen 41:42), bore the state seal used to authenticate royal decrees. Giving it therefore signified Joseph's elevation to the chief office beneath the king. Ahasuerus similarly gave Haman his ring to seal the decree against the Jews, and later transferred it to Mordecai (Esth 3:10; 8:2, 8, 10).
