Clement

(gentle, merciful) (Phil 4:3) - named by Paul as a fellow worker whose name is in the book of life. The New Testament says no more. Ancient Fathers generally identified him with Clement of Rome, regarded in church history as Rome's third bishop. Tradition says the Roman presbyters unanimously chose him after the death of Cletus, also called Anacletus. Living through Domitian's persecution, he suffered martyrdom in the third year of Trajan, about AD 100 or 101, being cast into the sea with a stone at his neck near Chersonesus Taurica.
