(laurel tree) (2 Macc. 4:33) — a celebrated grove and shrine of Apollo and Artemis, near Syrian Antioch, situated, it is supposed, on the left bank of the Orontes, in the present-day locality of Beit el-Ma. The building of the shrine is attributed to Seleucus Nicator. It enjoyed, among other things, the right of asylum and was considered inviolable, and it was here that the unworthy high priest Onias took refuge from persecution, as is mentioned in the second book of Maccabees, in the citation given above.
