Poplar

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Gen. 30:37; Hos. 4:13)—a tree named among the rods Jacob peeled and among the shade trees beneath which Israel practiced illicit worship. The Hebrew libneh is commonly understood as white poplar, though storax has also been proposed. The source’s identification should therefore be treated as probable rather than certain.
