(Deut. 18:10; Num. 22:7; 1 Sam. 6:2). In Holy Scripture the word is used chiefly of false prediction and is equivalent to soothsaying, fortune-telling, or sorcery. Deuteronomy 18:10 mentions diviners together with enchanters, those who consult the dead, and other pagan abominations from which Israel was commanded to abstain.
