Necromancers, sorcerers

(Lev. 20:6, and elsewhere) — magicians, who occupied themselves with calling up and questioning the dead, in order to learn from them the hidden secrets of the future. Among their number especially well known is the sorceress of Endor, who called up for Saul the shade of the prophet Samuel (see Saul). No sin is condemned so strictly in Holy Scripture as sorcery, necromancy, and the questioning of the dead (Deut. 18:10, 14), and this not only in the Old, but also in the New Testament (Gal. 5:20).
