Divorce

(Deut. 22:19; 24:1; Jer. 3:8; Matt. 19:7). The Law of Moses did not forbid divorce absolutely, but the source explains this civil concession in view of Israel’s social conditions and the disorder that might otherwise have followed. Divorce therefore remained possible among the Jews, though it was often abused. In the source’s account, the school of Hillel allowed divorce for very slight causes, while the school of Shammai restricted it to grave marital unfaithfulness.
