Eben-ezer

(house of lambs) (1 Sam. 7:11) — a city of the tribe of Judah, on the Philistine border. “And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh,” says the writer of the First Book of Kings [Samuel], “and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car.” This city is mentioned by Josephus Flavius (Antiq. VI, 2, 2). In the Syriac translation this city, and Shen (v. 12), is called Beth-yashan, otherwise Beth-shen, and likewise in the Arabic. The city, it seems, formed a Philistine stronghold, situated at some distance from Mizpeh. At Beth-car, or near it, Samuel set up the stone Ebenezer (that is, “stone of help”) in memory of the victory won by Israel over the Philistines.
