Ether
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(abundance) (Josh. 15:42) — one of the cities of the tribe of Judah, in the lowland, afterward given to the tribe of Simeon (19:7). According to Eusebius and Jerome, it lay near Malatha in the district of Daroma, was a large and strongly fortified city, and was called in their time Jattir. Eusebius places it at a distance of twenty miles from Eleutheropolis, and says that in his time it was inhabited solely by Christians. But the identification of Ether with Jattir seems doubtful, since these were two distinct cities. See Jattir.
