Giva

(elevation, hill): a) of Benjamin (Josh. 18:22; Judg. 19:12–16) — this Giva is mentioned for the first time in the days of the Judges, in connection with the history of the Levite who lived on Mount Ephraim, a history that ended in the destruction of nearly the whole tribe of Benjamin (Judg. 19, 20); it lay to the north of Jerusalem, not far from it, on the road to Nablus. At present this city is placed above Shafat and is identified with the locality of Tell el-Ful; b) of Saul (1 Sam. 10:26) — a city, birthplace of Saul, mentioned for the first time in the account of Saul’s anointing as king, after which Saul went to his home — to Giva. At Giva of Saul the Gibeonites hanged the seven sons of Saul (2 Sam. 21:6).
The locality corresponding to present-day Giva of Saul is calledTell el-Ful, which, as is thought, is also identical with Giva of Benjamin; c) (Josh. 15:57) Giva — a city in the hill country of the tribe of Judah, mentioned together with Maon, Carmel, and others. Its location has not yet been precisely determined.
