Halicarnassus

— a well-known city in the Carian region of Asia Minor, on the shore of the Aegean, mentioned in 1 Maccabees (15:23), the dwelling place of a considerable number of Jews in the latter period of Old Testament history: the birthplace of the famous writers Dionysius of Halicarnassus and Herodotus. It was renowned for its harbor and the strength of its walls. It is now called Bodrum.
