(Isa. 5:24)—grass that has been cut and dried for fodder. Because dry grass is quickly consumed by fire and soon loses its freshness, Scripture uses it as an image of frailty and transience: “As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth” (Ps. 103:15). Isaiah compares empty human schemes with conceiving chaff and bringing forth stubble (Isa. 33:11).
