Grass
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Isa. 51:12)—a general biblical term for green growth, including vegetation used as fodder. Its rapid growth and brief life make it a frequent image of human frailty: grass flourishes in the morning and withers by evening (Ps. 90:5–6), the wicked spring up like grass only to perish (Ps. 92:7), and human days are like grass and the flower of the field (Ps. 103:15). Isaiah declares, “All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: the grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever” (Isa. 40:6–8; compare 1 Pet. 1:24–25).
