Humility
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Prov. 15:33)—a virtue opposed to pride and among the chief graces of Christian life. The humble person does not think highly of himself, recognizes that every good gift comes from God, and relies upon divine help and grace. Scripture commands Christ’s followers to clothe themselves with humility, “for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble” (1 Pet. 5:5–6). The perfect pattern is the Savior, who “humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Phil. 2:8). Scripture abounds in promises of mercy to the humble and warnings of judgment against the proud.
