Hunting; the taking of game and wild animals

(Gen. 10:9; 25:27–28). Holy Scripture frequently speaks of hunting game and wild animals. Nimrod was a mighty hunter (Gen. 10:9). Ishmael, son of Hagar, and Esau, Isaac’s elder son, both loved hunting; Ishmael used the bow. Instruments used for taking birds and wild beasts included the bow (Gen. 27:3; Isa. 7:24), spear and arrows (Isa. 56:5 [as printed]), nets and snares (Job 19:6; Isa. 51:20), traps (Eccl. 9:12), loops and pitfalls (Sir. 11:30), and pits (Ezek. 19:4; Ps. 119:85; Prov. 26:27). Assyrian and other monuments of antiquity sometimes contain detailed scenes of hunting lions, bulls, deer, and hares.
