Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Acts 15:22, 32, 40; 16:25–29)—a leader among the brethren at Jerusalem, a prophet, and one of the Seventy in the source’s ecclesiastical tradition. The source takes Silas as a shortened form of Silvanus (2 Cor. 1:19; 1 Pet. 5:12). It supposes that he was a native of Antioch and a member of the Christian Church there. He accompanied the Apostle Paul on several missionary journeys and shared his imprisonment at Philippi. According to tradition, he became bishop of Corinth and died there. His commemoration is kept on January 4 and July 30.
