(foundation, or dwelling, of peace) - this world-renowned city, the most ancient and celebrated city of the Promised Land, was called Jebus in antiquity (Josh 18:28) after Jebus, progenitor of the Jebusites. It is thought, however, that its antiquity reaches even to Abraham's time, identifying it with Salem, where Melchizedek was king and high priest in Abraham's days. David conquered Jebus from the Jebusites, made it the metropolis of his kingdom, and built northwest of the old city a fortress, or new city, called Jerusalem.
Thus Jerusalem became the capital of Judah. The more recent investigations of Palestine conducted down to the source's day cast much light upon Jerusalem and the other places of the so-called Holy Land.
