John the Apostle and Evangelist
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Matt 4:21) - one of the Lord's twelve chosen disciples and the writer of the fourth Gospel, three Epistles, and Revelation. His father was Zebedee, a fisherman of Galilee; his mother is believed, from comparison of Matthew 27:56 and Mark 15:40-41, to have been Salome, one of the women who ministered to the Lord from their possessions. He was also the brother of James the apostle. Scripture says nothing of the dates of his birth and death.
