Capernaum

(village of Nahum, or village of consolation) (Matt 4:13; 11:23; Mark 2:1; Luke 7:1; John 4:46 and elsewhere) - mentioned only in the New Testament and often as the Lord Jesus' chief and beloved dwelling place during His earthly life, the central place of His ministry in Galilee. It stood on the western shore of the Sea of Tiberias, near Bethsaida and Chorazin and close to Gennesaret. The Lord settled there after leaving Nazareth (Matt 4:13), so it came to be called His own city (Matt 9:1). There He paid the temple tax (Matt 17:24); Peter and Andrew lived there; and He healed Peter's mother-in-law of fever (Matt 8:14-15; Mark 1:29-31).
