King

—a title applied in Scripture to military leaders, rulers of tribes and cities, governors of peoples, pagan gods in the speech of idolaters, the LORD, and the Messiah. The Assyrian monarch is called “the great king,” and Nebuchadnezzar “king of kings” (Isa. 36:4; Ezek. 26:7). Yet throughout Scripture earthly rulers remain servants or instruments of the invisible King who rules over all.
