Shebna Somnas

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(tender youth) (2 Kings 19:2; Isa. 36:3)—at first steward of King Hezekiah’s palace and later royal scribe. His pride and vanity appeared when, though outside the royal line, he prepared a tomb for himself on one of Jerusalem’s heights where royal descendants were buried. Isaiah sternly condemned him, warning that he would lose his office and be carried into exile. Eliakim son of Hilkiah replaced him as steward, while Shebna received the lower and less influential office of scribe.
