The LORD was Israel’s King. Moses, Joshua, and the judges executed His commands; the Law ordered the people’s worship and common life; God disclosed His will through the Urim and Thummim and through the prophets; and the tabernacle marked His special presence. Idolatry was therefore not only sin but covenantal treason. Nevertheless, the people asked for a visible king. God granted the request while warning them of the burdens royal government would impose (1 Sam. 8).
