Kir-moab, Kir-hareseth, or Kir-heres

(Isa 16:11) - a Moabite city identified by Ptolemy with ancient Characmoba and commonly equated with Kir-hareseth (2 Kgs 3:25) and Kir-heres (Isa 16:11). Its later name Kerak belonged to a substantial town several English miles east of the Dead Sea toward its southern end. Apocryphal books, Christian writers, and later travelers also mention it. The town stood on a hill six miles south of Ar of Moab, surrounded by a partly ruined wall with towers, and contained about 550 families, mostly Muslim. The surrounding district bore the same name.
