Jazer

(a place fortified round about, according to Fuerst; according to Gesenius, one whom Jehovah helps) (Num 21:32; 32:1; Josh 13:25). The first explanation is more probable, since the city is thought to have existed before the Exodus and was then held by the Amorites. It lay east of the Jordan near Gilead. Under Moses it was conquered and destroyed by the Israelites, then rebuilt by the sons of Gad (Num 32:35). It was afterward given to the Levites, the sons of Merari (Josh 21:38-39).
Some prophets regarded it as a Moabite city; Numbers calls it a land, that is, the district or province of Jazer (Num 32:1). The prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah mention the luxuriant vine of Sibmah in Jazer, whose branches stretched beyond the sea and reached to the lake of Jazer; they also mention the noisy joy there at the grape harvest and the reaping (Isa 16:8-10; Jer 48:32-33). Jazer's present location is unknown, although it is thought to have stood at the present Wadi Seir, between Gilead and Heshbon.
