Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(jawbone) (Judg 15:9-19) - the place so named because Samson there struck down a thousand Philistines with an ass's jawbone. It was also called Ramath-lehi, or the casting away of the jawbone. In answer to Samson's prayer, 'God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout' (v. 19), and he revived after his heroic exploit.
