(flames, or perhaps fiery) (Gen 10:13; 1 Chr 1:11) - a people descended from Mizraim son of Ham, generally understood as the Egyptian Libyans (2 Chr 12:3; 16:8) who lived along northern Africa from the Nile toward northern Algeria. The earliest classical mention of Libya is in Homer's Odyssey (book 4.85). The country's immense extent and the scant knowledge of its interior explain why all Africa was sometimes called Libya, though some believed the name originally applied to a smaller territory.
