Fox

(Judg 15:4; Song 2:15; Neh 4:3; Matt 8:20; Luke 13:32 and elsewhere) - the familiar carnivorous animal of the dog family, noted for cunning and craft. Foxes were once very numerous in parts of Judea. They feed upon birds and small quadrupeds and sometimes follow armies secretly to eat the bodies of soldiers who die on campaign. The foxes Samson caught and used to destroy Philistine fields, vineyards, and olive groves show that the animal was common in Palestine during the period of the Judges.
