Lily
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Matt 6:28-29; Luke 12:27) - a very beautiful and fragrant bulbous plant. Palestine's meadows abound in many lovely, aromatic flowers. The Lord Himself praises the lily's beauty above all Solomon's splendid clothing: 'Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: and yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these' (Matt 6:28-29). Field lilies commonly bloom in Galilee in April and May, the season in which the source supposes the Sermon on the Mount was delivered.
