Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Ex. 35:25–26; Tob. 2:11; Matt. 6:28). It is almost entirely unknown when and where spinning was invented, but the art existed from the earliest times. The Egyptians were especially distinguished in it, as depictions on ancient monuments show. The Hebrews likewise spun various materials, chiefly hair, wool, and flax; silk and cotton became known to them only later.
