Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

, in general, is the lifting up of mind and heart to God, expressed in the reverent word of man to God. The model for all prayers, the common Christian prayer, must undoubtedly be called the Lord’s Prayer: Our Father, and so on (Matt. 6:9–13), which our Lord Jesus Christ taught the apostles and which they passed on to all believers. It is divided into the invocation, seven petitions, and the doxology.
