Meekness, meek

(Matt 5:5) - a quiet disposition of spirit joined with care neither to provoke others nor to be provoked by anything. Christian meekness acts especially by refusing to murmur against God or people when events oppose one's desires, by not surrendering to anger, and by not exalting oneself. The Lord promises that the meek shall inherit the earth. For Christ's followers collectively, the source sees a prophecy literally fulfilled: meek Christians, instead of being destroyed by the fury of pagans, inherited the world once ruled by them.
For Christians generally and individually, the promise further means that they shall inherit, in the psalmist's words, 'the land of the living,' where life does not end - eternal blessedness (Ps 27:13).
