The Creed calls the Church one because she is one spiritual body, has one Head, Jesus Christ, and is animated by one Spirit: “one body and one Spirit ... one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all” (Eph. 4:4-6). The local Churches of Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, Constantinople, Russia, and others are not separate bodies but members of the one universal Church. Their unity is visibly expressed in a common confession of faith and communion in prayer and the sacraments.
