Palestine

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

—the general name for the land of the Hebrews (Gen. 40:15), also called the land of the LORD (Hos. 9:3), the Holy Land (Zech. 2:12), the land of Israel (Ezek. 7:2), and the Promised Land (Heb. 11:9). At first the name was used only for the coastal territory occupied by the Philistines (Ex. 15:14; Isa. 14:29, 31; Joel 3:4). In this single sense the Hebrew name Pelesheth, corresponding to Palestine, is used in the Old Testament and rendered the land of the Philistines or Philistia (Ps. 87:4; 108:9).
