Palm

(Ex. 15:27; Lev. 23:40; Judg. 4:5; John 12:13; Rev. 7:9)—one of the noblest woody perennial plants of the palm family. There are extraordinarily many kinds; some writers have counted as many as a thousand. Palms grow abundantly in Arabia, Egypt, and southern Asia from the Indus to the Nile. In the source’s day they were not nearly so common in Palestine as was often supposed, though in earlier times they had been widespread there. Only a few in the gardens of Jerusalem, several at Nablus and in the Valley of Jezreel, and more in the coastal valleys of Philistia and Phoenicia and along the lower Euphrates remained.
